Atomic Calculation for the Atmospheres of Strongly-magnetized Neutron Stars
Complete modeling of radiative transfer in neutron star atmospheres is in progress, taking into account the anisotropy induced by magnetic fields, non-ideal effects and general relativity. As part of our modeling, we present a novel atomic calculation method producing an extensive atomic data set including energy values and oscillator strengths in the so-called Landau regime (B > 4.7 × 10Z G). ...
متن کاملPhysics of Strongly Magnetized Neutron Stars
There has recently been growing evidence for the existence of neutron stars possessing magnetic fields with strengths that exceed the quantum critical field strength of 4.4× 10 G, at which the cyclotron energy equals the electron rest mass. Such evidence has been provided by new discoveries of radio pulsars having very high spin-down rates and by observations of bursting gamma-ray sources terme...
متن کاملGravitational Radiation from Strongly Magnetized White Dwarfs
The magnetic fields of white dwarfs distort their shape generating an anisotropic moment of inertia. A magnetized white dwarf which rotates obliquely relative to the symmetry axis has a mass quadrupole moment which varies in time, so it will emit gravitational radiation. LISA may be able to detect the gravitational waves from two nearby, quickly rotating white dwarfs.
متن کاملDiffusion of neon in white dwarf stars.
Sedimentation of the neutron rich isotope 22Ne may be an important source of gravitational energy during the cooling of white dwarf stars. This depends on the diffusion constant for 22Ne in strongly coupled plasma mixtures. We calculate self-diffusion constants D(i) from molecular dynamics simulations of carbon, oxygen, and neon mixtures. We find that D(i) in a mixture does not differ greatly f...
متن کاملWhite dwarf stars in D dimensions
We determine the mass-radius relation of relativistic white dwarf stars (a self-gravitating degenerate Fermi gas at T = 0) in a D-dimensional universe and study the influence of the dimension of space on the laws of physics when we combine quantum mechanics, special relativity and gravity. We exhibit characteristic dimensions D = 1, D = 2, D = 3, D = 1 2 (3+ √ 17), D = 4, D = 2(1+ √ 2) and show...
